Artist Statement
My paintings explore art history through the mode of self portraiture. With my likeness I participate and witness the continuum of a lived tradition. I merge classical techniques with a contemporary vision to explore what it means to hold identity. I examine how my identity can drift between centuries and still remain complete. Each painting becomes a nod towards remembrance and an act of renewal, reviving the dialogue between painter and the subject. My studio becomes a theatrical stage, it is a site where memory, ritual, and imagination are explored and then merged. It is through painting that history opens itself up and becomes tangible. My art carries on the legacy of painting by reenactments of lived experiences. Within my studio space I explore the relationship between myself and time. I appear between illumination and shadow. I’m caught between the present and reflecting on the past. In my work time folds into pigment, allowing the observer to become the observed. Each painting becomes a reminder that all moments coexist, that the past and present consciously hold hands. In the end paint is gathered to breathe on the same surface and to share collected time.
